About This Wine:

Wild Duck Creek Rathjen Vineyard Mataro is a compelling single-vineyard expression that showcases the depth, character and potential of Mataro grown in the ancient soils of the Heathcote region.

Sourced from Ian and Lynn’s vineyard just north of Colbinabbin, the vines are planted on Cambrian soils dating back around 500 million years. Established in 2015, these low-yielding Mataro vines produce small berries with remarkable concentration, only reaching the quality required for a single-vineyard release after years of careful development.

The wine is crafted with a traditional approach, fermented in small stainless steel open fermenters before being basket pressed and matured for 16 months in second-use French oak hogsheads and barriques. This gentle élevage allows the intensity of the fruit and the unique site character to shine through.

Deeply aromatic, the wine offers layers of dark berries, plum, earthy spice and savoury Mediterranean herbs. The palate is powerful yet refined, with concentrated fruit, fine tannins and a beautifully savoury complexity that adds depth and length.

A distinctive and age-worthy Mataro with impressive structure and personality, reflecting both the rugged ancient terroir and the meticulous craftsmanship behind this exciting single-vineyard release.
