About This Wine:

Utzinger Black Label Pinot Noir is the estate’s premium Pinot Noir, crafted from estate-grown fruit including Abel, MV6 and Pommard clones in the cool-climate Tamar Valley.

Hand-picked and carefully sorted, the fruit underwent wild fermentation with 20% whole bunch inclusion, adding complexity and structure. Following a cold soak, the wine was basket pressed into a combination of new (30%) and seasoned French oak barrels before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, preserving both texture and character.

Medium burgundy red in colour, the wine initially reveals subtle reductive notes that quickly evolve into an intriguing mix of Middle Eastern spices, forest floor and savoury complexity. With air, layers of ripe cherry and raspberry emerge, bringing brightness and aromatic appeal.

The palate is generous yet composed, with a soft entry supported by fresh acidity and finely structured tannins. Dark spice, smoky undertones and concentrated red fruit carry through the palate, while judicious oak adds depth without overwhelming the wine’s natural elegance.

Fuller-bodied by Pinot Noir standards, this is a serious and layered expression, combining richness, savoury complexity and length with the refinement expected from Tasmania’s finest vineyards. The long, spice-laden finish suggests excellent potential for further development in the cellar.
