Southern Light Vineyards Ghostgum Chardonnay is a powerful yet finely poised cool-climate Chardonnay that reflects the exceptional character of the high-altitude Ghostgum Vineyard in the Mornington Peninsula.
Sourced from two estate blocks planted on their own roots in 1994 and 1995, the vineyard's elevated, east-facing aspect preserves remarkable natural acidity while allowing outstanding flavour development. Each block is hand-picked and vinified separately before the final blend is assembled.
Whole-bunch pressed and naturally fermented in French oak, with 30% new barrels, the wine spends 12 months on full lees without undergoing malolactic fermentation. This preserves its vibrant freshness while adding texture and complexity.
The bouquet is expressive and refined, offering layers of nectarine, yellow peach and honeydew melon, alongside hints of baby pineapple, saline minerality and a delicate strawberry sorbet lift. Subtle, savoury oak frames the fruit without overshadowing it.
The palate is generous and beautifully structured, combining impressive weight and concentration with vibrant acidity and a strong mineral backbone. Long, balanced and precise, it finishes with exceptional persistence and the structure to reward extended cellaring. A compelling expression of cool-climate Chardonnay that balances richness with elegance and energy.
"BRIGHT-MID YELLOW COLOUR; THE BOUQUET SHOWS DEVELOPMENT, SOME FRESH HERB/PARSLEY AND LIME AROMAS, THE PALATE FULL AND BROAD SHOWING SILAGE AND STONE-FRUITS WITH FIRM ACIDITY UNDERLYING."
95 Points, Huon Hooke, The Real Review
"JUICY ACIDITY ADDS TO THE FRESHNESS AND ENERGY. THE WINE HAS POWER, BUT IT IS WELL CAMOUFLAGED. THERE IS SERIOUS LENGTH HERE. "
95 Points, Ken Gargett , Wine Pilot
"IT'S AN IMPRESSIVE WINE... WITH EXCELLENT DEPTH OF FRUIT SHOWING ON THE PALATE, WHICH HAS A SLIGHTLY CASHEW, PEACHY CHARACTER ABOUT IT."
94 Points, Ray Jordan, Wine Pilot
