Sonnen Tasmania Chardonnay

Sourced from a single block of Chardonnay clone 95 in a special high-altitude site in Tasmania’s upper Derwent Valley, this is a distinctive, site-driven expression of Tasmanian Chardonnay. Farmed by Charles Downie and James Clements, the vineyard sits at the highest point of the site, with sweeping views across the Tasmanian landscape, from Mount Field along the Derwent River towards Sleeping Beauty and kunanyi / Mount Wellington.

The fruit is whole-bunch pressed, wild fermented and matured on lees in 500-litre French oak puncheons, with 20% new oak and full malolactic fermentation adding texture and complexity. The wine brings together savoury cereal-grain notes with ripe yellow stone fruit, grapefruit and bitter lemon. Richly textured yet finely balanced, it combines depth and subtle oak influence with a refreshing citrus edge, delivering a Chardonnay that speaks clearly of its cool Tasmanian origins.
