Shaw & Smith Lenswood Vineyard Chardonnay

From low-yielding vines at our estate vineyard in Lenswood, first planted in 1999, this site sits at 500 metres elevation with both east and west-facing aspects.

The fruit is hand-picked and sorted, gently whole-bunch pressed, then fermented in 500 L puncheons (30% new). The wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation and spends 10 months in oak before resting in tank prior to bottling.

Lifted florals and a fine flinty edge are complemented by subtle dried and woody spice. The palate unfolds with layers of citrus and stone fruit, supported by balanced acidity and a finely structured frame. Intensity is matched by restraint, finishing long and composed.

Scintillating acidity, a gentle, savoury underbelly, crisp stone fruit and green apple characters, a distinct weave of saline minerality with touches of fino sherry and preserved lemon freshness. Add in nougat and ginger snap biscuit, but all of that with an immense sense of fruit purity, too. Savoury, serious, vivid and refreshing in the same breath. A tour de force of chardonnay. Brilliant."
