Handpicked from the north-facing slopes of the Pierro estate in Wilyabrup, this Chardonnay is born of a truly remarkable site. Each vineyard block is planted to high-density, narrow rows that cling to rocky soils, gently sloping toward the Wilyabrup Brook. These mature vines - all over 30 years old - are low-yielding by nature, with their canopies carefully pruned to allow the fruit to bask close to the earth. The result is fruit of exceptional balance, purity and concentration, expressing the distinct character of this treasured pocket of Margaret River.
Situated within just 3km of the Indian Ocean, the vines are tempered by cooling maritime breezes throughout the growing season. Vineyard management is meticulous, aiming to optimise sunlight exposure for fruit, leaves and canes, while protecting against spring winds and encouraging full flavour development during the crucial summer ripening window.
Crafted exclusively from the revered gin-gin clone - a standout performer in Margaret River - the fruit is picked in multiple passes to capture a full spectrum of expression. Early picks lend lifted aromatics and bright acidity; later harvests contribute depth, texture and complexity.
Every parcel is chilled, hand-sorted and whole-bunch pressed with great care. The juice is gently settled and fermented in premium French barriques. A full malolactic fermentation adds silkiness and a seamless palate flow, while fortnightly lees stirring over 12 months builds richness, length and savoury dimension.
The VR Chardonnay is Pierro's pinnacle expression, a barrel selection of the finest 10 barriques from the vintage - a wine made only in exceptional years. With its layered complexity, refined structure and lingering finish, this is a Chardonnay that speaks eloquently of place, pedigree and the patient art of winemaking.

'This is so relaxed and easy to drink. It’s in its own groove, albeit with the powerful fruit flavours of Margaret River chardonnay. Pink grapefruit, Meyer lemon, white nectarine flecked with spices, some lemon curd and sweet, cedary oak, yet everything in perfect balance. A charming, super delicious vintage release.'

2021 VR Chardonnay
'Mike Peterkin holds back a little of his chardonnay each year for this vintage reserve release. It means you are forced to keep your hands off it until release. It was a vintage that suited chardonnays, and this is a cracker. It’s quite fine and delicate and only just starting to show traces of development with a roasted cashew and light toasty character combining on the nose. The palate reveals rich flavours held with a fine savoury acidity. Lively and expressive. Still with time ahead of it.'
