About This Wine:

For generations, Carolin's family has cultivated vines along the storied Roter Hang—Rheinhessen’s legendary Grand Cru hillside. Today, alongside her husband H.O. Spanier, Carolin continues that legacy with a deep commitment to organic and biodynamic viticulture, crafting exceptional Riesling and Pinot Noir from the steep, dry-farmed slopes between Bodenheim and Oppenheim.

A nature lover, oenologist, businesswoman, and mother of two, Carolin brings both heart and precision to her wines—and the Pettenthal Riesling GG is a testament to that.

This Grand Cru opens with striking clarity—pure, crystalline and expressive. The nose is layered and refined, with flinty minerality, crushed stone, ripe citrus and juicy white peach. On the palate, it's electric: vibrant and tightly wound, yet delivering a generous, mealy texture. Waves of lemon zest and grapefruit roll through a long, powerful finish that is simultaneously rich, elegant, and driven by a thrilling saline edge.

A benchmark dry Riesling, full-bodied yet full of finesse—Pettenthal GG is a wine that commands attention and rewards reflection.

"The wines from the twin estates of Bafenfeld-Spanier and Kuhling-Gillot have more up-front power and are self-confidently dramatic. Cue the spotlight! H.O. Spanier and Carolin Gillot-Spanier have been a couple and a winemaking team for 20 years and they, too, ... It’s impossible to pick out a single wine of theirs because there are many great stars. The Kühling-Gillot PETTENTHAL is another extraordinary expression of this great terroir, with off-the scale-flint and smoke expression, but also great Amalfi lemon intensity...The complex flint and smoke expression of this wine is off the scale. And you can say the same about the balance of stony vibrancy and restrained richness on the extremely concentrated palate. The Amalfi lemon intensity and filigree at the finish are also off the scale. So refreshing you feel like you’ve been thrown into a mountain pool fed by glaciers." - 99 points, James Suckling
