Introducing Saint Laurent, the enchanting and bohemian offspring of Pinot Noir. This intriguing variety originated in France, but in 1863, a bundle of cuttings made their way to Austria, finding a home at the renowned Klosterneuburg Monastery, a hub of viticulture and winemaking. The monks there nurtured these cuttings, planting and propagating them throughout Austrian vineyards. Back in France, however, all Saint Laurent plants succumbed to the devastating phylloxera outbreak.
Over the years, Austrian wine enthusiasts have fallen in love with this captivating and mysterious grape. Often compared to Pinot Noir, Saint Laurent is known for producing wines that are more full-bodied and bohemian. Recent DNA studies at the Klosterneuburg Monastery have confirmed that Saint Laurent is indeed the genetic daughter of Pinot Noir, the noblest of red grape varieties. However, the second parent remains a mystery.
Inspired by this tale, we have named our wine "The Foundling Saint Laurent." This name reflects the mythological story of a foundling infant, of uncertain parentage, left on the monastery steps, only to be embraced, nurtured, and adopted into a new home. In time, she discovers her royal lineage, realizing she is a princess after all.
The Saint Laurent is a complex and exquisitely beautiful red wine. Its perfumed nose offers aromas of roses, violets, cherries, raspberries, cardamom, and hints of mushroom and earthy forest floor. This wine boasts an extraordinarily deep texture, with seamlessly integrated red and black brambly fruits and delightful tannins, all balanced by a juicy acidity. Sit quietly and let this wine speak to you; she will whisper tales of her Pinot Noir mother.
Saint Laurent pairs sublimely with rare skillet-grilled lamb cutlets—perhaps deserving the nickname "Saint Lamb!"—and is equally perfect with rare duck breast or spicy beef or vegetarian dishes.
