Super G is an homage to the 'Rhoney' style of super Tuscans, showcasing a blend of grape varieties not typically associated with the dominant Shiraz/Syrah vines of the Grampians region. Our unique expression draws from Grenache sourced from Arrawatta Vineyard at a low elevation just south of Great Western, supplemented by a touch of Grenache from our own Moyston Hills in the south, alongside Mourvedre from our Moyston Hills vineyard.
This year's Syrah component hails from Moyston Hills, contributing an enhanced peppery character. Our approach involves destemming the Grenache and Mourvedre, while fermenting the Syrah with some whole bunches, resulting in a final cuvee with approximately 10% whole bunches. Natural fermentations and a gentle pump-over regimen every second day accompany a three-week maceration period. We opt for an 'infusion' style, minimizing manual manipulation of the cap.
Following this, the wine matures for 8 months in a combination of old puncheons, a 1000-liter oak vat, and a couple of older French hogsheads. This vintage, characterized by fine, cool conditions akin to the previous, showcases heightened red fruit tones, increased tannin complexity, and a notable presence of rotundone. While it may require a bit more time to fully reveal its potential, this wine promises to be an elegant and sophisticated medium-term option.
Grenache 58%, Syrah 36%, Mourvedre 6%.
