This Domaine, one of the oldest in Cahors with records dating back to before the French Revolution, is currently helmed by Philippe Bernede, the sixth generation of his family to make wine here. Over the past decade, Cahors has experienced a renaissance as people rediscover this fantastic gastronomic region, renowned for its duck and some of the best truffles in France.
Clos Le Coutale spans over 60 hectares of predominantly southwest-facing vines situated around the Lot River. The vineyards, averaging 25 years in age, are composed of 80% Malbec (known locally as COT), planted on a mix of gravel, silicates, and limestone clay.
This superb Cahors blend consists of 80% Malbec, 15% Merlot, and a touch of Tannat. The vineyards benefit from southwest exposure and gentle slopes that lead away from the river, featuring alluvial clay that imparts red fruit notes and softer tannins compared to the higher plateau sites. Each parcel is fermented in tank before being blended in January for the final cuvée. The wine is then transferred to new and seasoned oak barrels and foudres for one year of élevage.
