THE WINE REGION

Nestled in the protective embrace of the Carpathian Basin, Villany is Hungary’s southernmost and warmest wine region. Located just west of the Danube and a stone’s throw from the border, its sun-drenched vineyards sprawl across the southern and eastern slopes of the Villany Mountains. With 2,182 hectares under vine, this renowned region is celebrated for its bold, complex red wines crafted in a distinctive sub-Mediterranean style. Villany also produces bright, fruit-driven sparkling wines and refreshing summer whites, showcasing its remarkable versatility.

CLIMATE AND SOIL

Villany’s climate is continental, enriched by Mediterranean influences that create the perfect conditions for world-class winemaking. Among Hungary’s 22 wine regions, it boasts the highest levels of heat and sunshine, fostering the production of full-bodied, age-worthy reds. The diverse terroir features loess and red clay over a carbonate bedrock, while its abundant thermal springs and geothermal warmth contribute to exceptional grape ripening. This unique combination ensures consistently high-quality fruit with outstanding depth and character.

A GERE FAMILY LEGACY

Winemaking runs deep in the Gere family, spanning seven generations of tradition and expertise. Attila Gere, originally a forester, received a small vineyard as a wedding gift from his father-in-law—a moment that marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey. Since 1989, he and his wife, Katalin, have cultivated one of Hungary’s most prestigious family wineries. Today, their daughter Andrea and her husband Kristof carry the legacy forward, steering the winery toward even greater success.

THE ESTATE

The estate’s vineyards are planted on Villany’s finest sites, including Csillagvolgy, Konkoly, Ordogarok, and Kopar—the latter being the region’s warmest and the first to be harvested each year. Committed to producing wines of exceptional purity, the vineyards have been organically farmed since 2010, yielding stress-free, nutrient-rich fruit. Hand-picked at peak ripeness, the grapes are vinified with meticulous care using modern, gentle techniques. Fermentation is driven by the winery’s own selected local yeast culture, followed by barrel ageing in premium Hungarian oak, imparting depth and elegance to the wines.

SUSTAINABILITY COMMITMENT

Sustainability is at the heart of the Gere family’s philosophy. Their dedication to organic viticulture extends beyond the vineyards, embracing environmentally responsible practices across the entire winery. By harnessing renewable energy sources—such as solar panels, geothermal heat, and biomass heating—the winery minimises its ecological footprint while preserving the natural beauty of the region. Their commitment ensures that every bottle reflects not only Villany’s extraordinary terroir but also a forward-thinking approach to winemaking.
