What is there to say about the amazing wine McLaren Vale produces? We think one of the original 'influences' says it all...
“McLaren Vale has it all. The ever-changing scenery; the choice – indeed over-choice – of restaurants in wineries and in the towns; and the vignerons, rightly proud of their region and their wines, ever-welcoming visitors.
McLaren Vale Grenache is its secret weapon, not merely Australia’s best, but every bit as good as that of the Rhône Valley. McLaren Vale Shiraz exudes its sense of place with its distinctive streak of dark chocolate, and the maritime climate underpins the controlled generosity of its Cabernet Sauvignon.” James Halliday.
With over 180 years of wine experience it is no doubt the wine reputation of McLaren Vale is held in good stead. It is known as an innovative region producing the 'trilogy' of reds, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache.
Starting off with more dry table wines in the 19th Century before shifting towards fortified wines at the turn of the century it wasn't until the 1970s that table wine grew in popularity and over 25 new wineries popped up in the region. Fast forward and today the region is host to more than 190 producers and 80 cellar doors.
Its because of regions like that that Australia is known for such high calibre wines.
