Tasting Notes:
We are on a bit of a Tempranillo binge at Purvis Cellars and for good reason, there is some damn fine examples around at the moment.
Pinga is a pet project of Dominic and Krystina of Pondalowie. This wine is an example of them showcasing a variety that they are passionate about - Tempranillo (a Nebbiolo too has just been released under this label).
What is it about Tempranillo? One of the great varieties of Rioja, Spain, the grape is easily turned into highly approachable, food friendly wine. Some of the Spanish examples have mouth puckering tannins, but no more than a good Cabernet Sauvignon.
This wine is medium bodied with lifted aromatics of violet, baked earth and concentrated red and blackberries. Small amounts of Petite Sirah (Durif), Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon (hence et al) have been added to build up structure and fill in the corners. This is wonderfully supple and smooth on the palate with vibrant red and black fruits with a good support cast of chocolate oak, spice, tannin, and length of palate.
This is one of the nicest wines we have come across recently and we reckon everyone should try it. This is not a scary wine, or edgy, or borderline in quality. It is approachable, flavoursome and likeable. Tempranillo is well suited to the Australian climate and this is just one of many fantastic examples.
Buy it, drink it, love it.
