Heathvale - Shiraz 2007

RegionEden Valley

William Heath, purchased a section of land in the Eden Valley in the 1860’s naming it Heathvale. Wine production was phased out in the 1920's to make way for apricots and apples before current owners Trevor and Faye March began replanting in 1987. The first vintage was in 1990 and a relationship with Bethany wine was established. Now under their own label, Heathvale crush approximately 50 tonnes across all varieties. This shiraz is a luscious, velvety wine, perfectly ripened. Smooth and bold, laden with sweet blackberry fruit, chocolate hints, toasty oak and a ripple of black pepper typical of the Eden Valley. It does need 30-40 minutes breathing to open up and truly express itself, giving some extra layers of flavour and length of palate. Depth, flavour and drinkability are the hallmarks here. Outstanding for the price. more more

Malt Shovel Brewery Mad Brewers Orchard Ale Saison

CountryAustralia

An interesting beer. In fact it is a beer that you must try, but it won’t suit everybody. It is enjoyable with mixed feelings though. This Saison represents the direction we should be going here in Australia and the boundaries we must push. Why?………Why not. It pours a orange brown hue and very clear. The head was thin and weak with loosely distributed bubbles. Sounds ordinary but really it doesn’t matter. The aroma had a sharp note with old apples, peppery/grassy hops, yeast and malt. The flavours are soft and creamy with a dominating (over ripe) apple character. It hits front and mid palate where the creamy mouthfeel shows and plenty of malty sweetness, plus faint pepper, mild hops and a distinct sweet/sour cidery finish. It is quite an easy drink and reasonably refreshing. more more
